The cost of treatment in the healthcare system is rising ever faster. For 2024 alone, the expenditure of all statutory health insurance funds will be at least €5.7 billion higher than expected. Expenses that should actually be paid by the federal government or the federal states also play a role here.

This development also has an impact on revenue planning. This is because these are also estimated in advance by experts for the entire statutory health insurance system and then distributed to the health insurance funds as allocations via monthly deductions. The problem: in the past, the sum that was important for the budget planning of a health insurance fund and therefore announced in advance largely corresponded to the sum that was actually available after the end of a financial year. Today, lower revenues are generated retrospectively, which have to be balanced out in the budget for the following year.

The following also applies to the BKK W&F: the financial strength of our members has no influence on the determination of the additional contribution. To cover our expenses, we only receive income from the lower nationwide average from the additional contribution. The additional contribution is therefore only individual to the health insurance fund with regard to expenses.

The additional contribution – less “individual” than expected

The additional contribution of the BKK W&F will therefore be 3.99 percent (+1.0 percent) as of January 1, 2025. For employees, half of it is borne by the employer, so that the share for insured persons increases by 0.5 percent.

All members of the BKK W&F will receive corresponding written information by post in the next few days. Employers, pension insurance and other contribution-bearing or paying bodies will also be automatically informed.

Important: All additional benefits of the BKK W&F will remain unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, all contributions for statutory health insurance are applied. This also includes the supplementary contribution.

If you pay less for health insurance by switching, you will also have to pay more tax on your gross salary. This eats up a small part of the hoped-for savings. A comparison of benefits is therefore more worthwhile than ever.

For some groups of people, the average supplementary contribution rate set by the Federal Ministry of Health applies instead of the supplementary contribution rate of their own health insurance fund. This applies to insured persons whose contributions are paid by third parties, for example recipients of unemployment benefit II. The amount of the supplementary contribution is also irrelevant for recipients of unemployment benefit I. In this case, the employment agency pays the contribution regardless of the amount of the health insurance company’s supplementary contribution. You can find more information on this under the heading OTHER OBLIGATORY INSURANCE.

Yes, the employer pays half of the additional contribution (borne solely by the member until 2018). This also applies to statutory pension insurance pensions.
