From January 15, 2025, the new electronic patient file – the ePA for everyone – will be part of standard care and will be created automatically for people with statutory health insurance.
Up to now, patients have had to apply individually to their health insurance provider for an ePA, but this has not led to the nationwide acceptance desired by the legislator.
Health insurance companies are obliged to inform their policyholders about the ePA. If insured persons do not want an EPR, they can lodge an objection with their health insurance fund against the use of their digital file or that of their co-insured children. Young people who have reached the age of 15 can make their own decisions about the use of their electronic patient file.
