In principle, hospital services also include the admission of a person accompanying the child for medical reasons. Irrespective of this, the healing process of sick children is accelerated if a trusted companion is at their side during hospital treatment.

Frequently asked questions

In accordance with the recommendation of the Society of Children’s Hospitals and Pediatric Departments in Germany e.V. (GKinD), the BKK W&F also reimburses the costs of accommodating an accompanying person up to the amount of the respective valid daily rate for the following groups of people:

  • for newborns and infants
  • for toddlers and preschool children
  • for schoolchildren up to their 9th birthday

Note: This additional benefit only covers the reimbursement of accommodation costs; loss of earnings is not affected.

A contribution towards the costs of accommodating an accompanying person is also possible for older children if one of the following conditions is met:

  • Inpatient admission as an emergency in case of acute illness with a vital threat (e.g. meningitis, croup, asthma status) or
  • Impairment of consciousness Severe/life-threatening illnesses and procedures
  • Disability (mental/physical)
  • Pronounced anxiety/separation anxiety
  • End-of-life care
  • Planned training measure for the accompanying person
  • Children with communication problems (deaf-mute, foreign language)
