Better vision through play

When one eye sees much worse than the other, doctors speak of amblyopia. In most cases, the eyes are organically healthy or are already corrected with glasses due to refractive errors. The standard treatment is to patch one eye, known as occlusion. However, in around 30 percent of cases, this therapy alone does not lead to a change in visual acuity. This is where the online vision training course “Playing to see better!” comes in.

Frequently asked questions

Amblyopia is a common visual disorder in children that can be improved through targeted intervention. Amblyopia occurs when one eye is not properly developed and the brain “erases” the image of that eye. Amblyopia is treated by masking the eye with better vision in order to activate the weaker eye (occlusion therapy). However, masking alone does not lead to a change in visual acuity in almost 30% of cases.

The play-based stimulation therapy uses the appeal of PC games for children. The aim is to make it fun for young patients to improve their vision through simple and exciting exercises.

Approaches from practice and research are combined with new technologies. Children can choose between nine PC games depending on their age and interests. In the background of the games, vision is improved by a special wave pattern.

With our “Playing to see better!” care offer, we provide our insured persons with an innovative and digital additional service free of charge.

The web-based vision school uses playful exercises while a special wave pattern stimulates the weaker eye in the background. Your child plays the games between 30 -45 minutes per day for 90 days, in addition to the occlusion therapy. Playing to see better is not only effective, but also entertaining, which increases the motivation and fun factor for your child.

At a glance:

  • Individually adapted: The exercises are adapted to the needs of each child to ensure maximum effectiveness.
  • From the comfort of your own home: Your child can practise in a familiar environment, which reduces stress and increases motivation.
  • Progress tracking: Parents and the treating ophthalmologist can follow progress closely and gain insight into the development of vision.

The visual exercises are provided by Caterna Vision GmbH and were developed together with the Technical University of Dresden. An individual appointment for further information can be made at caterna.de/bkk-wf to book an appointment.

The program is useful if the use of the eye patch is not expected to produce optimal treatment results or has not shown the desired improvements. It is recommended for children between the ages of 4 and 12 for whom the doctor sees little chance of success with patch treatment. The only other requirement is a PC or tablet with an Internet connection. This is because the success of “Playing to see better!” is based on regular training at home.
