What you should pay attention to before your holiday
Medical bills incurred in other European countries may often only be partially covered by the statutory health insurance companies – not at all from almost all countries outside Europe. The costs for a repatriation or rescue flight may not be covered in principle, regardless of the country of travel.
Scope of services
Only in countries with which Germany has a social security agreement are you entitled to the same medical services as the people who live there. At the doctor, dentist or hospital, it is usually sufficient to present the European Health Insurance Card (back of your insurance card). In this case, the costs will be settled with us by the foreign doctor via the German Liaison Office for Health Insurance Abroad (DVKA).
Special certificates of entitlement are only available for Bosnia-Herzegovina, Turkey and Tunisia. We will be happy to send you these before the start of a trip. Before starting a trip, please find out about other special features in your holiday country, especially about the current Corona situation – even if there are currently only travel warnings and no bans.
Recommendation: Private holiday travel health insurance
Again and again, even in treaty states, it happens that the foreign doctor does not accept the European Health Insurance Card and bills you privately for his service. These bills may then only be reimbursed by us in the amount of the actual health insurance benefit, so that even within Europe, significant co-payments remain with the insured. We therefore recommend that you take out private travel health insurance in your own name for all stays abroad. Please also pay attention to the scope of services during the Corona pandemic.
