If a person in need of care receives help in a fully inpatient care home and the need for a home exists, the BKK care insurance fund will contribute to the costs. Here too, maximum amounts apply depending on the level of care. The contribution is intended for costs incurred as a result of care-related expenses, including expenses for care and expenses for medical treatment services. In exceptional cases, if there is a particularly high need for medical treatment care, these services are covered by the health insurance fund. In this case, there is no deduction from the care insurance budget. There is also an entitlement to measures for additional care and activation that go beyond the extent of generally necessary care. For these special measures, which must be applied for by the person in need of care, the care homes receive a remuneration supplement from the care insurance fund. The costs for accommodation and meals in the care home (so-called hotel costs) are the responsibility of the person concerned. Investment costs, insofar as these can be charged by the care home, are also borne by the person in need of care.

If a person in need of care with care level 1 chooses full inpatient care, the care insurance fund will subsidize the expenses incurred with 131 euros per month as part of the relief amount.

The care rates for care grades 2 to 5 in the same care facility must be structured in such a way that all those in need of care always receive the same amount for the costs not covered by the care insurance fund. This has the positive effect that this facility-related personal contribution of the person in need of care does not increase if they are assigned to a higher care level than before. Although the nursing home’s entitlement to remuneration increases as the care level rises, the cost subsidy from the care insurance fund also increases at the same time. The amount of the one-direction-related personal contribution therefore remains unchanged. If the health condition of a person in need of care has deteriorated, an application should therefore be made for allocation to a higher care level. The person in need of care does not suffer any financial disadvantages as a result. However, the nursing home will then receive a payment corresponding to the actual care required.

The BKK care insurance fund’s share is paid directly to the care home without any red tape. If the care insurance amounts and the person in need of care’s own income are not sufficient, an application for social assistance should also be made if necessary.

The BKK provides a list of local nursing homes that are approved by the long-term care insurance fund for the care and support of its insured members.

Care in special inpatient facilities for the disabled

If a disabled person in need of care lives full-time (day and night) in a special facility for disabled people, they also receive the individually required care aids there. Special facilities in this sense are, for example, boarding schools for the education of disabled children or workshops for disabled people with workplaces suitable for disabled people. The primary focus of such facilities is on measures for participation in life in the community, so that professional and social integration, schooling or education are the main features of full inpatient care. In all of these facilities, nursing care for the disabled people living there on a long-term basis is only a necessary accompanying measure. However, it is not the main focus as in a typical full inpatient care home. These main services are regularly the responsibility of providers other than the long-term care insurance fund.

The BKK nursing care insurance fund contributes a lump sum of 10% of the nursing home costs for those in need of care from care level 2. This lump sum is limited to a maximum monthly amount of 278 euros, which is paid directly to the facility.

If a person in need of care who receives full inpatient care in a special facility also spends days at home (e.g. at the weekend or during vacation periods), additional benefit entitlements may arise (e.g. for care benefits in kind or care allowance).
