The birth of a child is an exciting and formative experience for expectant parents that brings with it many questions and decisions. Statutory health insurance provides young families with advice, financial support and, of course, medical care – before, during and after the birth of their child, so that mother and child-to-be have everything they need. This is based on the so-called maternity guidelines.

As a rule, a pregnancy lasts around 40 weeks. Check-ups are scheduled every four weeks until the 32nd week of pregnancy. From then on, the appointments will be every two weeks until the due date. Once the due date has been reached, check-ups will take place every two days until the tenth day after the due date. Then daily checks are scheduled until the 14th day. The birth is then induced. If there are risks, such as a twin pregnancy, the check-ups will be every two weeks, then weekly.

Insured members of the BKK W&F are additionally entitled to a special ADDITIONAL BENEFIT BUDGET OF 300 EUROS per pregnancy for reimbursements on the following topics:

  • Reimbursement of the costs of non-prescription, pharmacy-only medicines if these are taken as an additional preventive measure due to pregnancy. The prerequisite for this is that the medication is not generally excluded from cover and a gynecologist issues a corresponding private prescription.
  • Alternatively, the budget can also be used for certain preventive examinations (toxoplasmosis test, serological examinations for infections, e.g. HIV), the paid participation of the husband insured with the BKK W&F in a childbirth preparation course, or a paid midwife on-call service between the 30th and 42nd week of pregnancy.

Important: Reimbursement documents must be received by the BKK W&F by March 31 of the following year at the latest. Ultrasound examinations are no longer part of the budget due to a legal prohibition.

A miscarriage is physically and emotionally very stressful. The duration of maternity leave depends on the week of pregnancy in which the miscarriage occurred:

  • from the 13th week up to 2 weeks
  • from the 17th week up to 6 weeks
  • from the 20th week up to 8 weeks

An informal medical certificate stating the date and week of pregnancy is required for payment.
